How To Make Moonshine Mash

Moonshine mash is the heart and soul of a working still. While there are dozens of different recipes, practically all of them involve the use of a substance like corn meal or flour. This is essentially the precursor that transforms your ingredients into moonshine mash. Once these ingredients ferment, it will release alcohol vapor into the still. If you are interested in learning more, keep reading for a simple walkthrough on how to make moonshine mash.
Mixing Your “Mash” Ingredients
Start by mixing all of your mash ingredients into a large bowl. You can modify the ingredients depending on your personal preference, but some of the most popular mash ingredients include corn meal, yeast, sugar, malt and water. Take all of these ingredients and mix them into a large bowl. Continue mixing them into the consistency is evenly spread throughout. Don’t worry too much about about sizes or portions; just toss in a fairly equal amount of each ingredient. Depending on your ratio of ingredients, you should end up with a fairly thick, gooey substance, which is perfect for creating mash.
Fermenting
After mixing all of your ingredients together, you will then need to wait for it to ferment. The exact amount of time for fermentation to occur depends on several different factors, such as the type of ingredients used, the ratio, amount and temperature. However, it’s critical that you wait until the mash has fermented before moving onto the distillation process; otherwise, your moonshine will have reduced alcohol content.
Distillation
Now comes the fun part – distilling your moonshine mash. Place the mash in a large pot and heat it to approximately 170-175 degrees Fahrenheit. Try not to go above the point or you run the risk of burning the mash. 175 seems to be happy medium for most mashes that will extract alcohol vapor without ruining your mash. Wait until all of the alcohol has successfully distilled from the mash, at which point you can remove it from the heat. Congratulations, you’ve just made moonshine mash! Feel free to drink the beverage once it’s cooled off and store the remaining mash ingredients for use later.
Also, please remember to avoid eating your moonshine mash. Once you’ve created a batch of moonshine, you can store the mash in the refrigerator to use again later. You can’t, however, eat the mash, as it’s likely spoiled and may contain harmful bacteria.
