Garden slugs are a serious pest that can jeopardize the livelihood of your plants. In addition to eating through the soft, leafy parts of plants, they leave a trail of mucus on their wake. This mucus encourages the growth of bacteria, mold and viruses, all of which can prove harmful to plants. The bottom line is that you must regain control of your garden by eliminating these slimy little critters.
Why You Should Avoid Chemical Pesticides
While there are dozens of pest-control products on the market, many of them rely on toxic chemicals that may poison your plants and/or the soil. Sure, they may solve your slug problem, but they may also kill your plants in the process. Unless you want to take this risk, it’s recommended that you avoid the use of chemical-based pesticides.
The Beer Method
If you have some beer laying around the house, though, you can create a safe and effective garden slug trap to use around your plants. Garden slugs are naturally attracted the smell of yeast and sugar, making beer an effective bait. And once the slug slithers their way into the cup, they will become trapped where they are unable to escape.
Steps To Creating a Garden Slug Beer Trap:
- Fill up a typical 12-ounce plastic cup about 3/4 of the way full with beer (note: slugs are not biased and will gladly slither their way towards any beer in their path).
- Dig a hole around the problem areas in your garden where slugs are known to inhabit.
- Place the beer-filled cup down inside the hole so the top rim of the cup is level with the ground.
- Let the beer cup sit for at least 24 hours before checking it.
- Hopefully, it will catch several slugs during this time, at which point you can empty it and try again.
Note: try to avoid accidentally kicking dirt, mud or other debris into the beer-filled cups as you walk around it.
If you have some old, spoiled beer laying around your home or garage, you can put it to good use by creating garden slug traps. It’s incredibly easy and you’ll probably be surprised to find out just how effective it is at catching garden slugs. With these pesky little critters eliminated from your garden, your plants can grow and thrive once again.
