Corona Issues Recall on Select Products

bella_summer_water_19241_hOne of America’s favorite south-of-the-border imported beer, Corona, recently announced a recall a small percentage of its products. So before you pop the cap on a frosty Corona, you should check and see if it’s listed under the company’s recall.

So, why is Corona recalling one of the country’s favorite Mexican beer imports? It’s not the actual beer that’s the problem, but rather the bottle. The company issued a statement soon after the recall, citing a problem in the bottle manufacturing process.

The recalled products currently suffer from a defect in which glass shards may break off more easily. Of course, this is a small recall that affects less than 1% of all Corona products, but consumers should still check their fridge to make sure they don’t own any of the defective bottles.

Which Products Are Being Recalled?

According To Corona’s website, the following products are being recalled:

  • Any code that starts with “G” and also ends with “9” on six- and 12-packs
  • Any code that starts with “F29” and also ends with “9” on 18-packs only
  • Any code that starts with “F30” and also ends with “9” on 18-packs only

To determine whether or not your Corona products are being recalled, look for the 8-digit alphanumeric code printed on the back of the 12-ounce bottles and side of the can cartons. If the code contains any of the references prefixes mentioned above, refrain from drinking it and call Corona immediately.

It’s important to note that this is a voluntary recall, meaning neither the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor any other regulatory body is forcing Corona to recall its products. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean the FDA shouldn’t issue a mandatory recall. Even the slightest possibility of glass shards contaminating its products is a serious hazard for consumers.

“Constellation Brands Beer Division announced that it is expanding the list of production codes consumers should look for to determine whether they have 12-ounce clear glass bottles of Corona Extra involved in a voluntary recall issued in the United States on Friday, August 15 because some bottles may contain small particles of glass.

After announcing the recall, the company continued and deepened its investigation of the issue. It found that the original list of production codes was not all encompassing and consumers may have affected product that was not identified in the original list of product codes. The company believes that the recall still affects less than 1 percent of the bottles produced by one of its four glass suppliers.”
