Stone Brewing Co., the 10th largest craft beer brewing company in the U.S., recently announced plans to open a brewery and a restaurant in Berlin, Germany. The project will require an estimated $25 million to complete, but most importantly, this will be the first time for an American craft brewing company to set up shop overseas.
According to the company’s press release, Stone Brewing Co.’s new Berlin-based brewery will be housed in a century-old gasworks complex. While it may not look like much at first, Stone Brewing Co. hopes to transform this rustic old building into a magnificent brewery, complete with a full-service restaurant. This isn’t going to be another typical brewery, but instead it will serve as the “hub” for international Stone beer.
So, when can you expect to see the new Stone Brewing Co. open and ready for business? The current grand opening date is scheduled for late 2015 to early 2016. Of course, we all know how easily these dates can get pushed back, especially when the project involves something as large as transforming an old gasworks complex into a $25 million brewery and bistro.
German is known for its wide variety of beers, so Stone Brewing Co. will likely be a welcome addition to the country’s beer industry. And with the fist American craft beer soon to be available in Europe, the rest of the world can get their hands on traditional American beer just a little more easily. The only downside is that we’ll have to wait at least another year before we wee the new Stone Brewing Co. brewery open for business.
“This is a historic moment for Stone. I’ve wanted to say these next words for many years now: We’re coming to Europe. We’re coming to Germany. We are coming to Berlin!,” aid Greg Koch, CEO and co-founder of Craft Brewing Co.
“It has been a long time coming and I couldn’t be more proud to say that we are finally on our way to being the first American craft brewer to own and operate our own brewery in Europe. Once open, we will bring Germany and the rest of Europe a taste of our craft beer vision, and look forward to sharing the unique beers that we have spent the last 18 years brewing.”
