Creating your own moonshine is a fun and rewarding experience. After countless hours of hard work and dedication, you can sit back enjoy the fruits of your labor. However, it’s important that you follow some basic precautions when making moonshine to ensure the safety of you and anyone else around your srill. Far too many newcomers blindly attempt moonshining without any previous experience or knowledge, placing them at risk for injury. To avoid disasters such as this, check out the following safety tips listed below.
Safety Tip #1 – Distill Outdoors
One of the biggest mistakes newcomers make is trying to distill indoors. Sure, the nice air conditioned interior of your home, building or shed offers a more comfortable working environment, but it’s also far more dangerous. If your still were to blow up or catch on fire, the entire building could be destroyed. To be on the safe side, only distill in an open outdoor area. You won’t have the luxury of an air conditioner, but that’s a small price to pay for your safety and well-being.
Safety Tip #2 – Fire Extinguisher
No matter how long much experience you have with stills, you always need to keep a fire extinguisher nearby as a safety measure. Stills work on the principle of using extreme heat to evaporate alcohol content. This heat may create a fire if the source malfunctions or if it is used improperly. In addition, the alcohol vapor created by the still is highly flammable and can be set off with just a small flame or spark. This is why each and every still should have a fire extinguisher within arm’s reach at all times.
Of course, a fire extinguisher isn’t going to do a whole lot of good if it needs recharging. Try to get into the habit of testing your fire extinguisher at least once a month to ensure it’s charged and in working order. Either replace or recharge it if it’s low on solution. There’s nothing worse than trying to use a fire extinguisher on a burning still only to discover it’s out of charge.
Safety Tip #3 – Use Glass Containers
I know this is probably common sense to most people, but you should only collect moonshine from your still using glass jars and containers. Plastic containers may end up melting from the extreme heat of a still; thus, spilling your moonshine on the floor. The bottom line is that you should only use glass containers to store your newly created moonshine.
