‘Paleo Ale’ Brewed With Authentic Whale Fossils

We’ve covered some rather unorthodox brews here on the MoonshineDVD Blog, including the brain-filled Walking Dead-themed beer Dock Street Walker, and now we have another one to add to the list: Paleo Ale. In staying true to its namesake, Paleo Ale is brewed with authentic 35-million-year-old whale fossils. We’re not sure what kind of flavor dinosaur-era whale fossils offer a brew, but there’s an undeniable ‘cool’ factor associated with Paleo Ale!
Paleo Ale is brewed by the Virginia-based brewery Lost Rhino Brewing Company and features a well-balanced malt flavor with hints of sweet buttery biscuits, grapefruit, pineapple and grain. With a 6% alcohol by volume (ABV), Paleo Ale isn’t an overwhelming brew by any means. In fact, some people will likely prefer a heavier ABV.
So, who’s responsible for the creation of this other worldly brew? Paleo Ale is the brainchild of Jason Osborne, co-founder of Paleo Quest, and Jason Akerboom from the Lost Rhino Brewing Company. The Jason-Jason duo used their knowledge to create a truly unique beer with an authentic paleontology theme. Along with the tradition ingredients that are usually found in beer, such as hops and sugar, Akerboom and Osborne incorporated some ancient whale fossils that are believed to be 35 million years old!
Of course, you shouldn’t expect to see a massive fossil from an ancient whale bone sticking out the Paleo Ale. When the two Jasons are brewing Paleo Ale, they swab the inside of an old an ancient whale fossil stored at the Calvert Marine Museum to extract cell samples. Next, they place these samples inside the beer while it’s still brewing. Technically, you are drinking parts of an ancient whale fossil, but it’s on a microscopic level, so you probably won’t even notice.
So, where can you get a bottle of Paleo Ale? There are several different bars and restaurants around the Washington D.C. area that offer this beer. If you find yourself in the area, I recommend asking around. Just the bragging rights of saying you’ve tasted beer brewed with 36-million-year-old whale fossils makes it worth it. However, another reason why you should drink Paleo Ale is because a portion of the company’s proceeds will go towards charities in partnership with Paleo Quest.
