What do you do when you can’t seem to choose between tequila and beer? Well, Heineken has the solution to your problem: a new tequila-flavored beer called Desperados.
Desperados, a subsidiary of Heineken, has actually been in the business of making tequila-flavored beer for well over a decade, predominantly focusing on markets in Europe and South America. The beer has done exceptionally well overseas, with critics praising it for its bold flavors and crisp bite. Even with its popularity, though, the company has been reluctant to release it in the U.S. Perhaps they are afraid of poor sales due to the fact that most Americans prefer whiskey, rum and vodka over tequila. Regardless, it looks as if Desperados is changing their stance, as they’ve begun selling their product to certain U.S. regions earlier this month.
Currently, you can buy Desperados — the tequila-flavored beer — in Georgia and Florida. The company is also preparing an ad campaign to market their product in upscale cities, such as Buckhead and South Beach. But will their marketing efforts alone be enough to convince Americans to take the plunge into tequila-flavored beer? We’ll have to wait and see, but if overseas activity is any indication, we can expect to see sales of Desperados to roar.
Now you’re probably wondering how to get your hands on Desperados without traveling to the southeast. According to a statement made by the company, they are gearing up for a nationwide release next year. If you’re willing to wait another year, you’ll probably find Desperados for sale at your local liquor/beer store. If your’e not willing to wait that long, you can either travel to the southeast or purchase it over the Internet (assuming online alcohol sales are legal in your area).
According to the company’s official website, Desperados is “A BEER FLAVOURED WITH TEQUILA. A UNIQUE TASTE EXPERIENCE THAT COMBINES THE SWEETNESS OF TEQUILA FLAVOURS WITH BITTERNESS OF A HIGH QUALITY, GOLD BEER.”
In case you were wondering, Desperados has a 5.9% alcohol by volume (ABV). Surprisingly, this isn’t much higher than your traditional ales. Some people might be concerned of a strong bite or kick with tequila-flavored beer, but at 5.9% ABV, it’s a relatively mild and easy-to-drink brew that most people should enjoy.
