We’ve covered some pretty unique types of beer here at the MonShineDVD.com blog, including a variety infused with ancient dinosaur bones, as well as a beer variety infused with goat brains (Walking Dead theme). Well, fans of the delectable and ultra-rare fungi, truffles, will be glad to hear there’s a new brew featuring these mushrooms.
Created by Moody Tongue’s founder, Jarod Rouben, Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner contains actual shaved pieces of truffles — an ingredient that no previous brewer or culinary artist has ever attempted (at least to our knowledge). Rouben plans to sell his beer for a rather high price of $120 per 22-ounce bottle.
Of course, there’s good reason why Rouben and his team are charging such as high amount of the new Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner beer: truffles are expensive. Depending on the particular variety, they can sell for $3,200 or more per pound! That’s a hefty price tag considering most mushrooms and fungi cost just dollars on the pound. So, what makes truffles stand out from typical edible mushrooms?
Truffles are unique in several different ways, one of involves their growth patterns. Unlike most other mushrooms, truffles attach themselves to tree and plant roots. As a result, harvesting truffles requires extensive digging as well as a little bit of luck. Specially trained pigs and hogs are often used by hunters to help discover and unearth these ultra-rare mushrooms.
The truffle-infused beer is somewhat rare, so you may have trouble finding a bottle even if you’re willing to pay the “premium” price of $120 per bottle. In an interview with the NY Times, Rouben told reporters that he made just 40 barrels of the Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner — roughly the equivalent of 80 kegs. With plans to sell the brew at upscale restaurants and bars in NYC, these 40 barrels will likely go fast.
“At Moody Tongue, our goal is to create thoughtful, exciting beers that blend familiar flavors and quality ingredients.
“As a former cook, our Brewmaster Jared Rouben approaches every new beer like a chef develops a new dish: from sourcing the finest ingredients to designing the most innovative recipes. Rouben taps his culinary background to develop exceptional beers by cooking with grains, seasoning with hops, and enhancing flavor profiles with fresh produce, herbs and spices,” wrote Moody Tongue in their company’s mission statement.
