With a title like “best beer in the world,” expectations are high for Westvleteren ale. But if you’ve asked anyone who’s tried this bold-flavored beer whether it lives up to its title, you’ll find an overwhelming amount of people support the beer.
Brewed by Trappist monks in Belgium, Westvleteren ale isn’t your ordinary mass-produced beer that’s available for sale at the local grocery store or supermarket. The monks here have been brewing it since 1838, and up until now, customers were forced to travel to the monk’s brewery (yes, the monks have a brewery) in Belgium to get their hands on it.
So, what makes the Westvleteren ale the best beer in the world? It’s hard, if not impossible, to describe the bold, delicious, well-balanced flavors of this brew without experiencing it for yourself. With that said, it’s a sweet malt with hints of caramel, malt, wheat and barley. The monks hit the nail on the head in terms of flavor. Each of the flavors are noticeable yet not overwhelming, allowing for a well-balanced brew that goes down easy.
Still not convinced that the Westvlerteren ale is the best beer in the world? Check out its 100% rating over at BeerAdvocate.com. Yes, it has a perfect 100% BA score based on 4,016 ratings. Now that’s pretty impressive!
The brewery makes the following three beers:
- Westvleteren Blonde: 5.8% ABV
- Westvleteren 8: 8% ABV.
- Westvleteren 12: 10.2% ABV
As you can see from the list above, Westvleteren beer contains a rather high alcohol content when compared to traditional brews. With the Westvleteren beer containing over 10% alcohol by volume, some people may assume it’s an overbearing beer, but thankfully this ins’t the case. The ingredients work together to damped the alcohol. You still get the full alcohol concentration when drinking the brew, but the caramel and wheat flavors overtake it.
The company’s official website states the following:
“Westvleteren 12 is a Belgian Trappist Ale that has consistently been voted the single best tasting beer in the world. All major beer rating sites agree that this is the pinnacle of beers, including: Beer Advocate, Rate Beer and Beer Pal.”
The Tappist monks responsible for brewing the world’s best beer follow a belief that allows them to produce and sell products in order to earn a living; therefore, they aren’t disobeying any of their religious beliefs by brewing the delicious Westvleteren beer. Some of the other products produced and sold by the Tappist monks include soap, bread and ceramic dishes.
